Community coalitions have been around for years, bringing the community together around important issues that directly impact the people who live, work, and thrive in the community.
In Santee, there are a number of citizen's groups like ours that work on a wide variety of issues. Our coalition only focuses on the issues of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use in the community, with particular attention to the impact on our children. Study after study shows that behaviors at a young age determine the behaviors for later in life. By impacting our youth now, we will over time, impact our entire population.
Who Are We?
The Santee Solutions Coalition is made up of a number of community members, parents, youth, local businesses & agencies, and other prevention organizations. We try to reach out and work with as many community members as possible, with particular attention to individuals representing the following sectors:
- Parents
- Youth
- Youth Oriented Organizations
- Law Enforcement
- Healthcare Providers
- School
- Other Prevention Providers
- Faith Groups
- Civic/Volunteer Organizations
- Community
- Businesses
- Media
- City/County/Tribal Government
Our coalition was originally formed by the Santee Community Collaborative which still exists today and works to build a healthier, proactive community that builds resilient children and families. The Santee Solutions Coalition still remains as an integral part of the Santee Community Collaborative and maintains as the substance abuse prevention arm of the collaborative. Some of the goals the Santee Community Collaborative is currently focusing on include: Create a physically and mentally healthier community; reduce substance abuse; enhance youth leadership; reduce racism and hate while developing the value of diversity; community education; and building the capacity of the collaborative.
By focusing on the specific issues in Santee we are much more effective than addressing all potential drug and alcohol problems. In 2007 we were awarded a federal Drug Free Communities grant that has allowed us to focus on some of the key issues in Santee including:
- Youth access & use of alcohol (both in the home and in the community)
- Youth access to Tobacco and second hand smoke
- Youth access to Marijuana
- Youth access & abuse of over-the-counter & prescription medications
